Under the sea

Ibiza bajo el mar The waters that bathe the Pitiusas islands and their islets conceal extraordinary underwater riches.

With the excellent visibility (up to 50 metres) and the variety of their seascapes and species, the seabeds of Ibiza and Formentera are among the few well-conserved areas of the Mediterranean.

Ibiza bajo el mar Seven seas

Meadows of sea grasses, caves, wrecks, coraligenous reefs, sponges teeming with examples of groupers, lobsters, rays, dentex fish, cuttlefish, squid and shoals of barracuda are characteristic of these waters.

Here you can still find turtles, dolphins, tuna and even the odd Mediterranean monk seal (monachus monachus), the sea's best diver.

For seven months (from May to November), the water temperature is very pleasant, reaching a maximum of 29 degrees at a depth of 30 metres in the months of July, August and September.

Night dives and the exploration of caves and archaeological remains from Phoenician boats are two exciting alternatives for the exuberant depths of Ibiza and Formentera.

Marvels of the sea

The nature reserve of Ses Salines covers 9,000 hectares of seabed, the largest protected area along the Spanish coastline.

Diving and observing the treasures of the deep provide you with an incredible spectacle of flora and fauna, of sea-beds and colours. And the largest concentration of loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean has been found to the south of Formentera.
