Churches

Iglesias de Ibiza The churches formed part of the integral defence plan. They were sited in strategic places, in the highest point of the area, and provided a refuge in the event of pirate attacks.

Iglesias de Ibiza Higher Church of Santa María (Ibiza Cathedral)

This was rebuilt and extended in the 18th Century, and only the original tower and apse remain, along with the 16th Century sacristy.

San Antoni de Portmany

This is not the original church as it was rebuilt in the 15th Century. There are written reports of the original church dating back to 1362. Its belfry is of particular note.

Santa Eularia des Riu

Originally built in 1342, the present church dates back to 1568. The atrium does not appear to match the present church.

San Josep de Sa Talaia

This church is a compromise between Ibizan tradition and Valencian influence.

San Jordi

This dates back to 1506, and has the most unique and spectacular design.

Jesús

Work started on this church in 1466, and the present-day building dates back to 1549.
