Costumes, instruments and typical dances.
Costumes
Traditional costumes have influences from the Punic period and from the Near East. No buttons, buttonholes, zips, etc. are used; everything is held together with pins. The skirts have a very full appearance because they have as many as 12 petticoats underneath InstrumentsThe basic instruments are percussion and wind instruments. Tunes are simple and happy. The drum and large castanets (the largest that you will find) are made out of juniper and make sonorous sounds; the flute plays high notes and a small clarinet, called Sa Xeremia also accompanies sometimes, made out of rosebay. Another wind instrument is Es Bimbau, which has just one reed. DancesWomen dance modestly with gentle movements, in contrast to the men who make jumping movements around the women. Although the men feel superior, and show a great respect for the women, they never turn their backs on the women. There are four dances: LA CURTA, LA LLARGA, LES NOU RODADES and LA FILERA. |
